    How to use it

    1. Choose Paperback or Kindle ebook, then the Amazon store you sell in most.
    2. Enter your list price. For a paperback, add the page count, trim size and ink.
    3. For an ebook, pick the 70% or 35% plan and enter your file size from KDP.
    4. Type how many copies you expect to sell a month to see a monthly estimate.
    5. Copy the result or the share link, and try a few prices before you publish.

    How it works

    Paperbacks

Royalty = royalty rate x list price - printing cost
    Rate = 60% at $9.99 or more on Amazon.com, 50% below
Printing cost = fixed cost + pages x per page cost

    Worked example: a 300 page, 6 x 9 in paperback in black ink, listed at $14.99 on Amazon.com. The price is at or above $9.99, so the rate is 60%: 60% x $14.99 = $8.99. Printing costs $1.00 + 300 x $0.012 = $4.60, so you earn $4.39 a copy.

Short books pay a flat printing price instead: a black ink paperback up to 110 pages costs $2.30 to print on Amazon.com at a regular trim. Trims wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in pay the large trim rate. KDP won't let you set a price below printing cost divided by the royalty rate.

    Kindle ebooks

    35% plan: 0.35 x (list price - VAT)
    70% plan: 0.70 x (list price - VAT - delivery cost)
Delivery cost = file size in MB x $0.15 on Amazon.com

    Worked example: a 2 MB ebook at $4.99 on the 70% plan, sold to a US buyer (no VAT). Delivery costs 2 x $0.15 = $0.30. 70% x ($4.99 - $0.30) = $3.28 a sale. The same book on the 35% plan earns $1.75.

    Reference

Paperback royalty per copy on Amazon.com: 6 x 9 in, black ink on cream paper. Prices under $9.99 earn 50%. Below min means the price is under KDP's minimum list price for that page count.

    Questions authors ask

How much does KDP pay per paperback sold?

On Amazon.com you earn 60% of the list price minus printing when the price is $9.99 or more, and 50% minus printing below that. A 300 page black ink paperback at $14.99 earns $4.39. At $8.99 the same book earns -$0.10, because the rate drops to 50%.

What price range gets the 70% ebook royalty?

On Amazon.com the 70% plan needs a list price from $2.99 to $12.99. KDP raised the top of the band from $9.99 on July 7, 2026. Other stores have their own bands, listed in the reference table above. Outside the band only the 35% plan is available.

What is the KDP delivery fee?

The 70% plan deducts a delivery cost for every sale: $0.15 per MB on Amazon.com, with a minimum of $0.01. A 2 MB file costs $0.30 a sale; a 10 MB picture book costs $1.50. The 35% plan has no delivery cost.

Should I choose the 35% or the 70% royalty plan?

If your price is inside the 70% band, 70% nearly always pays more, even after delivery. At $12.99 a 2 MB ebook earns $8.88 on 70% and $4.55 on 35%. Above the band you drop to 35%: at $13.99 you would earn $4.90, less than at $12.99. Very large files are the one case to check both.

    What does Expanded Distribution pay?

Expanded Distribution sells your paperback through bookstores and libraries. KDP pays 40% of the list price minus printing, so it needs a higher price to earn anything. The 300 page example at $14.99 earns $1.40 a copy that way. Not every trim and paper qualifies.

Why do some ebook sales earn 35% on the 70% plan?

The 70% rate only applies to buyers in KDP's 70% territories, which include the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and about 30 more countries. Sales to buyers elsewhere earn 35%. Buyers in Brazil, India, Japan and Mexico earn 70% only if the book is in KDP Select. Books that are mostly public domain content earn 35% everywhere.

Does an Amazon discount lower my royalty?

Not for paperbacks. KDP pays on your list price even when Amazon sells the book for less. For ebooks, if Amazon matches a lower price elsewhere, the 70% royalty is worked out on the lower sale price.

    Does this work for IngramSpark?

No. IngramSpark does not publish its print cost rates, so we can't estimate its compensation. Use IngramSpark's own publisher compensation calculator. For ebooks, IngramSpark pays 85% of the net revenue it receives.
