How to use it
- Enter your page count. The word count to pages tool gives you one if the book isn't laid out yet.
- Choose the ink and paper, and your trim size.
- Pick the marketplace where most of your readers buy. The table shows every other one.
- Enter how many author copies you want to see the total before shipping.
- Take the result to the royalty calculator to choose a list price.
How it works
KDP prints each paperback when someone orders it and takes the printing cost out of your royalty.
Printing cost = fixed cost + page count x per page cost
Short books (black ink up to 110 pages): one flat price
Minimum list price = printing cost / royalty rate
Worked example: a 300 page, 6 x 9 in paperback in black ink, sold on Amazon.com. 6 x 9 in is a regular trim, so the fixed cost is $1.00 and each page costs $0.012. $1.00 + 300 x $0.012 = $4.60. The same pages at 8.5 x 11 in are a large trim: $1.00 + 300 x $0.017 = $6.10.
The trim is large when it is wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in. White and cream paper cost the same. Groundwood pages cost about 5% less than white or cream. Bleed and cover finish do not change the price.

Questions authors ask
How much does it cost to print a book on KDP?
A 300 page 6 x 9 in paperback in black ink costs $4.60 to print on Amazon.com. KDP takes that out of each sale, so you pay nothing up front. Color, page count and a large trim raise it; paper color, bleed and a matte or glossy cover do not.
How does KDP calculate printing cost?
Fixed cost + page count x per page cost. On Amazon.com the fixed cost is $1.00 and black ink pages cost $0.012 each at a regular trim, $0.017 at a large trim. Each marketplace has its own rates in its own currency.
Why does a 100 page book cost the same as a 24 page book?
Short black ink paperbacks pay a flat price. Up to 110 pages the cost is $2.30 on Amazon.com at a regular trim, whatever the page count. Groundwood books are flat up to 112 pages and premium color up to 40.
How much more does color printing cost?
A lot. A 200 page 6 x 9 in book costs $3.40 in black ink, $6.10 in standard color and $14.00 in premium color on Amazon.com. Standard color needs at least 72 pages and suits books with a few images; premium color is for picture books and photo-heavy books.
Does trim size change the printing cost?
Only through one line. Trims up to 6.12 in wide and 9 in tall pay the regular rate. Anything wider or taller, such as 7 x 10 in or 8.5 x 11 in, pays the large trim rate. 300 pages cost $4.60 at 6 x 9 in and $6.10 at 8.5 x 11 in.
How much do KDP author copies cost?
Author and proof copies cost the printing cost for your chosen marketplace, times the number of copies. Shipping and any tax are added at checkout. There is no further discount, because the printing cost is already the lowest price KDP offers.
What is the lowest price I can set?
KDP's minimum list price is printing cost divided by the royalty rate. On Amazon.com the rate is 60% from $9.99 and 50% below it. A book that costs $4.60 to print can be priced from $9.20. Use the royalty calculator to see what you earn at each price.
