    Short answer

A low-content interior is a PDF of repeated pages, such as lined, dot grid or planner pages. For KDP, keep every line inside the minimum margins: an inside margin of 0.375 in up to 150 pages and 0.25 in elsewhere without bleed. Tick the Low-content box when you publish. Low-content books cannot use a free KDP ISBN.

    How to use it

    1. Pick a page design and its line or grid spacing.
    2. Choose the trim size and page count.
    3. Pick your printer and bleed. The margins update to match.
    4. Choose the line color and whether you want page numbers.
    5. Download the PDF, upload it as your interior and order a proof.

    How it works

The generator looks up your printer's margins for the trim size and page count, then fills the text block with your design. Odd pages are right-hand pages with the inside margin on the left; even pages mirror them. The page design is drawn once and placed on every page, so even an 800 page notebook downloads quickly.

Text block = trim - inside margin - outside margin (width), trim - top - bottom (height)
Lines per page = text block height / line spacing, rounded down
PDF page with bleed (KDP) = trim width + 0.125 in, trim height + 0.25 in

Worked example: a 6 x 9 in, 120 page college ruled notebook for KDP with no bleed. 120 pages is in KDP's first band, so the inside margin is 0.375 in and the others are 0.25 in. The text block is 5.375 x 8.5 in, which holds 30 lines at 9/32 in spacing. With bleed, the PDF page becomes 6.125 x 9.25 in and the outside margins 0.375 in.

    Questions authors ask

What is a low-content book on KDP?

A book with little or no content inside, meant to be filled in by the reader: notebooks, journals, planners, log books and similar. KDP asks you to tick the Low-content box under Categories when you set it up, or the book is rejected.

Do low-content books need an ISBN?

No. Low-content books can publish without an ISBN or with your own, but cannot use a free KDP ISBN. Without an ISBN, KDP places a barcode on the back cover. The ISBN choice cannot change after publishing.

Should I choose bleed for a notebook?

Only if something runs to the edge of the page, like a background color or a full-page pattern. Plain lined, dot and graph pages do not need bleed. With bleed on KDP, the PDF page grows by 0.125 in wide and 0.25 in tall, and the outside margins rise to 0.375 in.

How many pages should a journal or notebook have?

There is no rule. Many notebooks run 100 to 150 pages. More pages raise the printing cost and the spine width. Check the print cost calculator before you settle on a number, and the cover calculator for the spine.

Can I sell low-content books in bookstores through KDP?

Not through KDP. Expanded Distribution is not supported for low-content books, whatever the ISBN option. Low-content books cannot be added to a series.

Why are the lines inside such a wide margin?

Printers trim pages and bind the inside edge, so content near the edges can be cut off or lost in the spine. The generator keeps every line inside your printer's margins for your page count. Lulu recommends wider margins than KDP, so pages built for Lulu have more white space.

Is the PDF ready to upload?

It is sized to your trim (plus bleed if you choose it), with mirrored margins for left and right pages and vector lines that stay sharp at any size. Order a proof copy before you publish to check the line color on real paper.
