    Short answer

Divide your total words by the number of chapters. 80,000 words in 25 chapters is 3,200 words a chapter, about 10.4 printed pages in a 6 x 9 in paperback at 11 pt, and about 12 min of reading at 260 words a minute.

    How to use it

    1. Enter your book's total word count, or your target.
    2. Choose Chapters to enter how many chapters you want, or Chapter length to enter words per chapter.
    3. Pick the trim size, font, size and line spacing you plan to print with.
    4. Read the words, printed pages, manuscript pages and reading time per chapter.
    5. Copy the result, download the chapter plan as a CSV, or copy the share link.

    How it works

Words per chapter is the total divided by the number of chapters. Printed pages come from our word count to pages model: it works out how many words fit on a page from the trim, margins, font and line spacing, at 70% fill for paragraph ends and dialogue.

Words per chapter = total words / chapters
Printed pages per chapter = words per chapter / words per page + 0.8 opener and short last page
Reading time = words per chapter / 260 words a minute

Worked example: 80,000 words in 25 chapters is 3,200 words each. A 6 x 9 in page in 11 pt Garamond holds about 332 words, so 3,200 / 332 + 0.8 = 10.4 printed pages. Starting each chapter on a right-hand page makes it 10.9. Reading it takes about 12 min.

    Manuscript pages

Manuscript pages assume US Letter, Times New Roman 12 pt, 1 in margins and double spacing, the usual submission format. That gives about 253 words a page.

    Questions authors ask

How long should a chapter be?

There is no set length. Chapters end where a scene or a turn in the story ends, so they vary within one book. This calculator gives you an average to plan with, and shows what a chosen length means in printed pages and reading time.

How many chapters should my book have?

Divide your word count by the chapter length you like to write. At 4,000 words a chapter, an 80,000 word book has 20 chapters. Switch to Chapter length mode and the calculator does this for you.

How many pages is a chapter?

It depends on the trim, font and spacing. At 3,200 words, a chapter is about 10.4 printed pages at 6 x 9 in and about 15.5 at 5 x 8 in, with the same 11 pt Garamond. In a double spaced manuscript it is about 12.6 pages.

Why is a chapter longer in pages than its words suggest?

Each chapter opens part way down its first page and its last page usually runs short. We add 0.8 of a page per chapter for that. Starting every chapter on a right-hand page adds a blank left-hand page about half the time, another 0.5 of a page on average.

How long does a chapter take to read?

A meta-analysis of reading studies by Marc Brysbaert (2019) puts the average adult silent reading rate at 260 words a minute for fiction and 238 for non-fiction. At 260, a 3,200 word chapter takes about 12 min. Fast and slow readers differ a lot.

What does "starts near page" mean in the chapter plan?

It is where each chapter would begin if every chapter had the same length, counting front matter before chapter one. Real chapters vary, so use it for a rough page map, not for a table of contents.
