The check digit math
ISBN-13: 978 + 929505512, weights 1 and 3. 9×1 + 7×3 + 8×1 + 9×3 + 2×1 + 9×3 + 5×1 + 0×3 + 5×1 + 5×3 + 1×1 + 2×3 = 126. 126 mod 10 = 6, so the check digit is 10 - 6 = 4.

How to use it
- Type or paste an ISBN-10 or ISBN-13. Hyphens and spaces are fine.
- Read both forms side by side. The one you did not type is worked out for you.
- If the check digit is wrong, the converter says which digit it expected. Check your ISBN record for a typo.
- For many ISBNs, switch to A list, paste one per line and download the CSV.
- Take the ISBN-13 to the barcode generator for your back cover.
How it works
An ISBN-10 and its ISBN-13 share nine digits. The ISBN-13 adds the prefix 978 in front and recalculates the last digit, the check digit.
ISBN-13 check = (10 - (d1 + 3 x d2 + d3 + 3 x d4 + ... + 3 x d12) mod 10) mod 10
ISBN-10 check = (11 - (10 x d1 + 9 x d2 + ... + 2 x d9) mod 11) mod 11, where 10 is written X
Worked example, ISBN-10 92-95055-12-8 to ISBN-13 978-92-95055-12-4:
ISBN-13: 978 + 929505512, weights 1 and 3. 9×1 + 7×3 + 8×1 + 9×3 + 2×1 + 9×3 + 5×1 + 0×3 + 5×1 + 5×3 + 1×1 + 2×3 = 126. 126 mod 10 = 6, so the check digit is 10 - 6 = 4.
And back again, 978-92-95055-12-4 to ISBN-10 92-95055-12-8:
ISBN-10: drop 978, weights 10 down to 2. 9×10 + 2×9 + 9×8 + 5×7 + 0×6 + 5×5 + 5×4 + 1×3 + 2×2 = 267. 267 mod 11 = 3, so the check digit is 11 - 3 = 8.
Only 978 ISBNs have an ISBN-10. ISBNs starting with 979 are 13 digits only.

Questions authors ask
How do I convert an ISBN-10 to an ISBN-13?
Put 978 in front of the first nine digits, drop the old check digit, and work out a new one with weights 1 and 3. The converter does all three steps and shows the math. The result is the same ISBN, not a new one.
Why does the last digit change?
The last digit is a check digit worked out from the others, and the two formats use different formulas. ISBN-10 uses modulus 11 with weights 10 down to 2. ISBN-13 uses modulus 10 with weights 1 and 3. So the check digit usually changes even though the rest of the number is the same.
Why can a 979 ISBN not be converted to ISBN-10?
ISBN-10s only ever existed for the 978 range. A 979 ISBN has no 10-digit equivalent, and the International ISBN Agency warns that forcing one creates duplicates and wrong orders. Quote 979 ISBNs in full.
What does the X at the end of an ISBN-10 mean?
It stands for 10. The ISBN-10 check digit can be 0 to 10, and 10 is written as X so it still fits in one character. ISBN-13s never use X.
Is an ISBN-10 still valid?
The ISBN is still valid, but ISBNs have been 13 digits since 1 January 2007, and the agency asks that the 10-digit form no longer be quoted. Use the ISBN-13 on your cover, copyright page, barcode and metadata.
Where do the hyphens go?
Hyphens split the ISBN into prefix, country or language group, publisher, title and check digit. Their positions depend on who issued the ISBN, so copy them from your ISBN agency record. If you type an ISBN with hyphens, the converter carries them over.
How do I know if an ISBN is valid?
Check the length (10 or 13), the prefix (978 or 979 for ISBN-13) and the check digit. The converter does all three and tells you the digit it expected, which catches most typos. It cannot tell whether an ISBN has actually been assigned to a book.
Are my ISBNs sent anywhere?
No. The converter runs in your browser, including list mode and the CSV download. Nothing you type leaves your device.
