    Short answer

KDP's minimum inside (gutter) margin grows with page count: 0.375 in up to 150 pages, 0.5 in to 300, 0.625 in to 500, 0.75 in to 700 and 0.875 in to 828. Top, bottom and outside margins must be at least 0.25 in without bleed or 0.375 in with bleed.

    How to use it

    1. Pick your trim size, or choose Custom size and type the width and height.
    2. Enter your page count. Use the word count to pages tool if you only know your word count.
    3. Choose bleed if any image or color runs to the edge of a page, and pick black and white or color ink.
    4. Switch between KDP, IngramSpark and Lulu to see each printer's margins on the spread.
    5. Copy the margins or download them, then set them in Word, Pages, Vellum or InDesign.

    How it works

KDP sets the inside margin by page count and the other three margins by bleed. IngramSpark recommends one margin for every side. Lulu recommends a safety margin on every side and adds a gutter to the inside as the book gets thicker. The calculator looks up each rule for your book, then subtracts the margins from the trim size to get the text block.

Inside margin (KDP) = the band for your page count
Outside margin (KDP) = 0.25 in without bleed, 0.375 in with bleed
PDF page with bleed (KDP) = trim width + 0.125 in, trim height + 0.25 in
Text block = trim width - inside - outside, trim height - top - bottom

Worked example: a 6 x 9 in novel with 300 pages and no bleed. KDP puts 300 pages in the151 to 300 page band, so the minimum inside margin is 0.5 in and the top, bottom and outside margins are at least 0.25 in. That leaves a text block of 5.25 x 8.5 in. IngramSpark recommends 0.5 in on every side. Lulu recommends 1 in inside and 0.5 in elsewhere. With bleed, KDP's outside minimum becomes 0.375 in and the PDF page is 6.125 x 9.25 in.

    Questions authors ask

What is the gutter margin in a book?

The gutter is the inside margin, the edge of the page that goes into the binding. It has to be wider than the outside margin because part of the page disappears into the spine, and the thicker the book, the more it disappears. That is why KDP ties the inside margin to your page count.

What margins does KDP require for a paperback?

An inside margin of 0.375 in for up to 150 pages, rising to 0.875 in for 701 to 828 pages. Top, bottom and outside margins must be at least 0.25 in without bleed and 0.375 in with bleed. These are minimums, and KDP rejects files that go below them.

Do I enter the gutter separately in Word?

KDP says that if your software has separate fields for the inside margin and the gutter, you should enter the same value in both. In Word, the simplest setup is Mirror margins with the inside margin set to the value above and the gutter left at 0, which gives the same inside space on every page.

Are the minimum margins a good design choice?

They keep your text from being trimmed or lost in the binding, but a page set at the minimum can look cramped. Many print books use wider outside and bottom margins than the minimum. Treat these numbers as the floor, not the target.

How does bleed change the margins?

On KDP, bleed raises the minimum top, bottom and outside margin from 0.25 in to 0.375 in, and your PDF page grows by 0.125 in in width and 0.25 in in height. The inside margin does not change. Choose bleed only when images or color reach the edge of a page.

Why are IngramSpark and Lulu margins different?

They publish recommended margins, not KDP-style minimums. IngramSpark recommends at least 0.5 in on every side, plus a 0.125 in strip on the bind side for color books. Lulu asks for a 0.5 in safety margin and recommends adding a gutter as the page count grows. If you print with more than one printer, use the largest value for each margin.

Do the same margins work for a hardcover?

KDP lists hardcover trim sizes on the same page as its margin table, and its hardcovers run from 75 to 550 pages, inside the ranges above. Hardcovers open less flat than paperbacks, so many designers add a little extra to the gutter.
