Short answer

Type your quote and attribution, pick a layout and a size, and download a PNG. The sizes follow each platform's help pages: Instagram 1080 x 1350 or 1080 x 1080, stories 1440 x 2560 and Pinterest 1000 x 1500. Everything is drawn in your browser, so your words never leave it.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste a quote from your own book, up to 400 characters.
  2. Add the author and, if you like, the book title and your website or handle.
  3. Pick one of four layouts and the size for where you will post it.
  4. Check the preview, then download the PNG.
  5. Copy the quote text for your caption, or copy a link to the same layout and size.

How it works

The image is drawn on a canvas at full size in your browser: instagram square 1080 x 1080, instagram portrait 1080 x 1350, story 1440 x 2560, pinterest pin 1000 x 1500 px. The quote starts large and shrinks step by step until every line fits above the attribution, so a short line gets big type and a long passage stays readable. Straight quotes and apostrophes you type become curly ones on the image.

Worked example: Thoreau's line from Walden is 95 characters. On the 1080 x 1350 portrait in the Paper layout it sits centered in Newsreader under a crimson opening mark, with a short rule and "Henry David Thoreau, Walden" below in our sans. Every size is measured from the shorter side of the image, so the same quote keeps its proportions on a 1440 x 2560 story.

A note on quoting other authors

Post your own lines freely. Before you post a line from someone else's book, check it is in the public domain or that you have permission. Fair use is decided case by case, and no number of words is automatically safe.

Questions authors ask

What size should a quote image be for Instagram?

Instagram shares photos up to 1080 px wide and keeps full resolution for aspect ratios between 1.91:1 and 3:4. The portrait 1080 x 1350 (4:5) takes the most room in the feed; the square 1080 x 1080 is the classic choice.

What size is best for Pinterest and stories?

Pinterest recommends a 2:3 ratio, 1000 x 1500 px, and says taller pins might get cut off. Meta's ads guide gives 1440 x 2560 px (9:16) for Instagram Stories images.

Can I make a quote image from another author's book?

Quoting someone else's book can need the rights holder's permission. The U.S. Copyright Office says fair use is decided case by case, with no set number of words that is always allowed. Your own writing, and books in the public domain, are the safe choices.

Which books are in the public domain?

The U.S. Copyright Office says all works published in the United States before January 1, 1931, are in the public domain there. Our samples come from books first published between 1813 and 1868. Other countries have their own rules.

Is my quote uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is drawn on a canvas in your browser and saved straight to your device. The share link carries only the layout and size, never your quote, names or handle.

Can I use my own fonts or colors?

Not yet. The four layouts use our print studio type and colors, tested for contrast. For a fully branded set of graphics for your book, our marketing team can help.
