Short answer
Set a length, enter your word count, and press Start. When the chime sounds, enter your new total. The timer logs the words written and your words per minute: 550 words in 25 minutes is 22.0 a minute. Your session history stays in this tab only, and the timer works offline once loaded.
How to use it
- Pick a sprint length, from 10 to 60 minutes, or type your own. It starts at 25.
- Enter your manuscript's word count before you start.
- Press Start sprint and write. Pause or finish early if you need to.
- When the chime sounds, enter your new word count and log the sprint.
- Run more sprints, then copy or download your session.
How it works
The timer notes the moment you start and counts down against the real clock. At the end you enter your new total, and the difference is what you wrote.
Words written = word count at the end - word count at the start
Words per minute = words written / minutes spent writing
Session rate = all words written / all minutes written
Worked example: you start at 12,400 words and end a 25 minute sprint at 12,950, so you wrote 550 words, 22.0 a minute. A second sprint from 12,950 to 13,350, finished after 20 minutes, adds 400 words at 20.0 a minute. The session is 950 words in 45.0 minutes, 21.1 words a minute.
Private by design
Your word counts and history are kept in the page's memory only. Nothing is saved to your device or sent to a server. The share link holds only your sprint length and chime setting.
Questions authors ask
What is a writing sprint?
A short, timed burst of writing where you aim to get words down without stopping to edit. You can sprint alone or with friends and compare word counts at the end. Pick whatever length keeps you focused.
How are words per minute worked out?
Words written divided by the minutes you actually wrote. Pauses do not count, and if you finish early only the time you used counts. 400 words in 20 minutes is 20.0 words a minute.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. The timer, the chime and the history all run in your browser. The chime is made by your browser's audio engine, so there is no sound file to download.
Will the timer keep going in another tab?
Yes. It measures real time rather than counting ticks, so switching tabs or apps does not slow it down, and the chime still plays at the end. The tab title shows the time left while you write.
Is my session saved?
Only while the page is open. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere, so closing or reloading the page clears the history. The browser asks before you leave if you have logged sprints. Download the CSV or copy the session to keep it.
Why is my word count lower after a sprint?
Cutting and rewriting can shrink a manuscript. A sprint with a lower total counts as 0 words written, so your words per minute is never negative.
