How much does it cost to publish a book?

Last updated 4 min read

Short answer

Self-publishing a book can cost nothing upfront. KDP and IngramSpark charge no setup fee, and KDP takes the printing cost out of each sale. You pay only for what you choose: proof copies ($4.60 for a 300-page paperback), your own ISBN ($125, or $295 for 10 from Bowker), editing, a cover and marketing.

How much does it cost to self publish a book on Amazon?

KDP charges nothing to set up, upload or list a book. It earns its share when the book sells: for a paperback, the printing cost comes out of each sale, so royalty = royalty rate x list price - printing cost. The only money you pay KDP directly is for proof and author copies, which cost the printing cost plus shipping and tax.

KDP proof or author copy cost, 6 x 9 in, black ink, cream paper, Amazon.com (USD, before shipping and tax)
PagesCost per copy
150$2.80
200$3.40
300$4.60
400$5.80
500$7.00

A 300-page novel listed at $14.99 earns $4.39 per sale after the $4.60 printing cost. Check your own book with the print cost calculatorand the royalty calculator. Kindle ebooks have no printing cost; on the 70% plan, KDP subtracts a delivery cost of $0.15 per MB from each sale.

What does IngramSpark charge to publish a book?

IngramSpark charges nothing to open an account or upload a print or ebook title. Like KDP, it takes printing costs out of each sale, and you pay for any copies you order. It does not publish a per page print rate, so price your book in its print and ship calculator. To sell the same paperback through both KDP and IngramSpark, you need your own ISBN.

How much does an ISBN cost?

KDP gives paperbacks a free ISBN, but it can only be used on KDP. Your own ISBN lets you sell the same edition anywhere and shows your own imprint. In the United States, ISBNs come from Bowker. Each format, such as paperback, hardcover and ebook, needs its own, and ISBNs never expire.

1$125$125.00
10$295$29.50
100$575$5.75
1,000$1,500$1.50

Our guide on whether you need an ISBN for KDP covers the choice, and the ISBN barcode generator makes the back cover barcode for free.

How much does it cost to edit a book?

Editing is usually the largest cost of self-publishing. The Editorial Freelancers Association publishes median rates from its member survey. For fiction, checked October 2026:

EFA median fiction editing rates, and what they mean for an 80,000-word novel (USD)
Type of editPer word80,000 words
Developmental edit3¢ to 3.5¢$2,400 to $2,800
Copyedit2¢ to 2.7¢$1,600 to $2,160
Proofread1.2¢ to 2¢$960 to $1,600

These are medians, and individual editors charge well above and below them. Nonfiction and specialist subjects often cost more. Count your manuscript with the book word count checker before you ask for quotes, since most editors price by the word.

What do cover design, formatting and marketing cost?

There is no public rate survey for book covers, interior formatting or marketing that we trust enough to quote, and prices range from free do-it-yourself to several thousand dollars for a custom illustrated cover or a full campaign. What you can do for free:

If you hire, ask for samples in your genre and a written list of what the price includes.

What is a realistic budget to self publish a book?

Four example budgets for a 300-page, 80,000-word novel, using the figures above. Cover design and marketing are left out because they vary the most.

Spend first where readers notice: a clean edit and a cover that looks right at thumbnail size. If you would rather hand the setup to someone, our publishing setup service works in your own accounts, so your rights and royalties stay yours.

How much does it cost to publish a book traditionally?

Nothing. A traditional publisher pays for editing, design, printing and distribution, and pays you an advance and royalties. In return it owns the publishing rights and decides whether to take your book. If a company asks you to pay to be published, it is selling a service: check who owns the ISBN, whose account the book sits in and who receives the royalties before you sign.

Questions authors ask

How much does it cost to publish a book on Amazon?

Nothing upfront. KDP does not charge to upload or list a book. For paperbacks it subtracts the printing cost from each sale, and for Kindle ebooks on the 70% plan it subtracts a delivery cost of $0.15 per MB. The only money you spend with KDP is for proof and author copies, plus shipping and tax.

How much does it cost to self publish a novel?

A 300-page novel can go live for the price of one proof copy, $4.60 plus shipping, if you use KDP's free ISBN and make the cover and interior yourself. Most of a real budget goes on editing: at the EFA fiction medians, a copyedit of an 80,000-word novel is $1,600 to $2,160.

Can I publish a book for free?

Yes. KDP and IngramSpark both let you upload for free, KDP offers a free ISBN for paperbacks, and proof copies are optional on KDP. Free tools, such as the ones on this site, cover the cover template, page count and barcode. You trade money for your own time and skill.

Do I need to pay for my own ISBN?

Only if you want to sell the same edition outside KDP or show your own imprint. A free KDP ISBN works only on KDP. In the United States, Bowker sells $125 for one ISBN or $295 for 10, and each format needs its own.

Why do some companies charge thousands to publish a book?

Publishing packages bundle editing, design, formatting and setup, and some add their own ISBNs, imprint or a share of your royalties. Before paying, check who owns the ISBN, whose account the book is in, who receives the royalties and exactly which services the price covers.

Does a traditional publisher charge to publish a book?

No. A traditional publisher buys the right to publish your book, pays for editing, design and printing, and pays you an advance and royalties. A company that asks you to pay to be published is selling a service, so judge it the way you would judge any other paid service.
