Short answer

KDP offers 16 paperback and 5 hardcover trim sizes, IngramSpark 32 paperback and 15 hardcover sizes, and Lulu 16 paperback and 15 hardcover sizes. 9 paperback sizes work at all three, including 6 x 9 in, the most common US trade size. Paper and ink options change by size.

How to use it

  1. Choose paperback or hardcover.
  2. Tick the printers you plan to use. To publish everywhere, tick all three and "Only sizes every ticked printer offers".
  3. Pick black and white or color to hide sizes that do not offer that ink.
  4. Select a size in the table to draw it to scale and list its papers and page ranges.
  5. Copy the details, download the table, or share a link with your choices.

How it works

The guide merges each printer's official size list into one table. Sizes within 0.015 in of each other count as the same size, so Lulu's 7.44 x 9.68 in and IngramSpark's 7.44 x 9.69 in share a row. For each size it shows the page range per printer, the widest across the papers that match your ink filter.

Offered = the printer lists the size for this format and at least one paper matches the ink
Page range = lowest minimum to highest maximum across matching papers

Worked example: 6 x 9 in paperback. KDP prints it from 24 to 828 pages on white paper, IngramSpark on every paper in its matrix, and Lulu from 32 to 800 pages. As a hardcover, KDP allows 75 to 550 pages.

Questions authors ask

What is the most common trim size for a paperback?

KDP calls 6 x 9 in the most common trim size for books in the US. Novels are also often 5 x 8 in or 5.5 x 8.5 in. All three sizes are offered by KDP, IngramSpark and Lulu.

Which trim sizes work at KDP, IngramSpark and Lulu?

9 paperback sizes are offered by all three: 5 x 8, 5.5 x 8.5, 6 x 9, 6.14 x 9.21, 7 x 10, 7.44 x 9.69, 8.27 x 11.69, 8.5 x 8.5, 8.5 x 11 in. Tick all three printers and "Only sizes every ticked printer offers" to see them with their papers.

What hardcover sizes does KDP offer?

5.5 x 8.5 in, 6 x 9 in, 6.14 x 9.21 in, 7 x 10 in, 8.25 x 11 in, from 75 to 550 pages, on white or cream paper in black ink or in premium color. KDP does not offer groundwood paper or standard color for hardcovers.

What counts as a large trim size on KDP?

Books wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in. Large trims cost more to print, so check the print cost before you choose one.

Can I change my trim size after publishing?

On KDP the trim size is locked once a paperback is published, so a new size means a new edition with a new ISBN. Your interior and cover have to be rebuilt for the new size too.

Why is my size missing for color or hardcover?

Each printer offers only some papers and inks at each size. IngramSpark, for example, prints groundwood and creme paper only at smaller sizes, and 11 x 8.5 in only in premium color. Switch the ink filter to see what is available.
