Short answer
A pen name generator suggests author names that fit your genre. Pick a genre, a vibe, a first name style and whether you want initials, and you get eight names with a note on how each one feels. Before you use one, search it on Amazon, Goodreads and Google to make sure no other author has it.
How to use it
- Choose the genre you write. It sets which surnames fit best.
- Pick a vibe, from classic to mysterious, and a first name style.
- Choose initials: full names, initials, a middle initial, or a mix.
- Lock the names you like and tap New ideas to replace the rest.
- Save your shortlist, then search each name before you decide.
How it works
First names are grouped by vibe and style. Surnames are grouped by feel: short and punchy, smooth and polished, friendly, shadowy, timeless, current and playful. Each genre leans on the feels that suit it, and your vibe adds its own. The note under each name says which feel it came from and how many letters it has, which matters on a narrow spine.
Pen name = a first name for the vibe and style + a surname from the genre's or the vibe's feel
Initials = first initial + a second initial + surname
Every pick comes from a seed, so a share link shows the same names
Worked example: Cozy mystery, Warm vibe, Feminine, Full name, seed 20260929 gives "Nell Applegate". With Initials and the same seed it gives "N. T. Applegate". Search both in quotes before choosing either.

Questions authors ask
Can I publish on KDP under a pen name?
Yes. KDP says you are free to use a pen name, as long as it does not impair customers’ ability to make good buying decisions. That means it should not copy or closely imitate another author’s name.
How do I check that a pen name is not already used by another author?
Search the full name in quotes on Amazon, Goodreads and Google, and look at author pages, not just book titles. Check for close spellings too. If an author in any genre already uses it, or a popular author has a very similar name, choose another.
Can I register my copyright under a pen name?
Yes, in the US. The Copyright Office says there is no legal requirement to give your real name on the application. If you file under a pen name, check the Pseudonymous box. You may add your legal name, but you do not have to.
Is a pen name protected by copyright?
No. The Copyright Office lists names among the things copyright does not protect. Your books are protected; the name on them is not. That is one more reason to check a name is free before you build a following under it.
Should I use initials in my pen name?
Initials hide the author’s gender, sound formal, and are short, which helps on a narrow spine. They can also be harder to remember or search. Initials often suit thrillers and literary fiction; a full first name feels warmer for romance and cozy mysteries.
My real name is close to a famous author’s. What should I do?
KDP suggests using a pen name, a middle name or an added initial when your name is similar to a popular author’s, so readers are not confused. Try the Middle initial setting here, or a new surname.
Are these names made by AI or taken from real authors?
Neither. Names come from lists of common first names and surnames we wrote for this page, picked with a seeded random number, and known author names these lists could land on are skipped. Nothing leaves your browser.
