    Short answer

Upload your front cover as a JPG or PNG, pick paperback or hardcover, and enter your page count and paper so the spine is the right thickness. Choose an angle, a background and a frame, then download a PNG up to 3,000 px wide. Everything runs in your browser, so your cover is never uploaded.

    How to use it

    1. Add your front cover as a JPG or PNG. Add your full wrap too if you want your spine art to show.
    2. Choose paperback or hardcover, your trim size, page count and paper. They set the spine thickness.
    3. Pick an angle, or turn the book all the way round with Turn, a drag or the arrow keys, to show the spine or the back.
    4. Choose a background: none for a transparent PNG, white, cream or your own color.
    5. Download the PNG at 1,500 px, or 3,000 px for print and large banners.

    How it works

The book is built as a real 3D object at your trim size, then drawn with a small WebGL renderer that runs on your device. Your cover is mapped onto the front, the spine and page edges get their own surfaces, and one light from the upper right shades every side. The soft shadow is drawn on the ground under the book.

Spine = page count x paper thickness
    From a full wrap: PPI = image height / (trim height + 2 x 0.125 in)
    Spine = image width / PPI - 2 x trim width - 2 x 0.125 in

    Worked example: a 6 x 9 in paperback with 240 pages on white paper has a spine of 240 x 0.002252 in = 0.540 in (13.7 mm). Its full wrap at 300 PPI is 3,837 x 2,775 px. The tool reads 2,775 / 9.25 = 300 PPI, then 3,837 / 300 - 12 - 0.25 = 0.540 in for the spine, and cuts the back, spine and front at those lines.

A hardcover gets boards that stand a little past the pages on three sides, a rounded spine and a hinge groove. Those details are for the picture only. For your print file, use the KDP cover calculator.

    Questions authors ask

How do I make a 3D book mockup for free?

Add your front cover above, set the binding, trim size, page count and paper, and pick an angle. Download the PNG at 1,500 px or 3,000 px wide. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit.

What size should my cover image be?

The file you export for print is plenty. At 300 PPI a 6 x 9 in front cover is 1,800 x 2,700 px, which stays sharp in the 3,000 px mockup. Below about 1,200 px tall the 2x PNG starts to look soft, and the tool tells you.

How do I show my real spine?

Add your full wrap cover (back, spine and front in one image) as well. The tool splits it using the 0.125 in bleed that KDP, IngramSpark and Lulu all use, and reads the spine width from the image, so the spine art lines up exactly. Turn the book, or choose Back, to show the back cover too. With only a front cover, the spine and back take the color along the front's spine edge.

How thick is the book in the mockup?

Page count times KDP's paper thickness: 0.002252 in per page for white paper and 0.0025 in for cream. 240 white pages give a 0.540 in spine. If you add a full wrap, the spine comes from the image instead, so it matches your cover file.

Can I make a hardcover mockup?

Yes. Choose Hardcover and the book gets boards that stand out a little past the pages, a rounded spine and a hinge groove. Use your front cover. The full wrap reader expects a paperback wrap with bleed, since case laminate files add a wide wrap margin around the art.

Can I get a transparent background?

Yes. Choose None and the PNG keeps its transparency, including the soft shadow, so you can drop the book onto any website, banner or ad. White, cream and your own color fill the background instead.

Where can I use the mockup?

On your author website, social posts, ads, newsletters and press kits. Retailers list your book with the flat cover file you publish, so keep mockups for marketing. The picture uses only your own art; nothing is added to it.

    Is my cover uploaded anywhere?

No. Your images are read and drawn in your browser, and the PNG is made on your device. Nothing leaves it, and share links carry only your settings, never the images.
