How to use it
- Type your description, or paste it from Word, Google Docs or an old listing. Pasting keeps bold, italics and lists.
- Use the toolbar for bold, italic, underline, headings and lists. Switch to HTML to paste or edit code directly.
- Watch the counter. KDP allows 4,000 characters, tags included.
- Check the notices for anything removed or flagged, and read the preview.
- Copy the HTML and paste it into the KDP Description box in Source mode.
How it works
The formatter reads your text the way a browser does, then rebuilds it from scratch. Paragraphs, headings and lists become the matching KDP tags. Bold, italic and underline are kept whether they came as tags or as the inline styles Word and Google Docs use. Everything else, from links and images to fonts and colors, is removed and its text is kept.
Characters KDP counts = every character of the HTML, tags included
Tags are always closed, nested in the right order, and never empty
Emoji and invisible characters are removed; spaces are collapsed
Worked example: the line "Book one of the Gull Rock series" is 32 characters. As a bold paragraph it becomes<p><b>Book one of the Gull Rock series</b></p>, which is 46 characters, so the formatting costs 14. A 4,000 character limit fits about 600 words of plain paragraphs.
Reference
The tags KDP accepts, and what this formatter turns into each one.
| Tag | Use | Made from |
|---|---|---|
<p> | Paragraph | Blank-line separated text, and anything block-like: div, blockquote, table rows |
<br> | Line break inside a paragraph | Single line breaks |
<b> | Bold | b, strong and bold styles from Word or Docs |
<i> | Italic | i, em and italic styles. KDP also accepts em; i is shorter |
<u> | Underline | u and underline styles |
<h4> <h5> <h6> | Headings, largest to smallest | h4 to h6 as they are; h1 to h3 become h4 |
<ul> <ol> <li> | Bulleted and numbered lists | Lists, including lines you start with a dash, bullet or number |
Questions authors ask
What HTML tags does KDP allow in a book description?
KDP lists 12: b, i, em, u, br, p, h4, h5, h6, ol, ul and li. Headings h1 to h3, links, images, tables, colors and font sizes are not supported. This tool keeps only those tags and removes everything else, keeping your text.
How long can a KDP book description be?
Up to 4,000 characters, and KDP counts the HTML tags too. A bold paragraph costs 14 characters of tags on top of its text. The counter shows the number KDP counts, plus the characters a reader actually sees.
How do I paste the HTML into KDP?
Copy the HTML here. In your KDP Bookshelf, open the book details, scroll to Description and switch the editor to Source. Paste, then switch back to check it. Save and publish as usual.
Why does my formatting look wrong on Amazon?
Usually because the description came from Word or Google Docs with hidden styles, unsupported tags or unclosed tags. Paste it into this tool: it rebuilds clean HTML with every tag closed and nested correctly, and tells you what it removed.
Why does KDP say my description has invisible characters?
Copying from documents can bring along zero-width spaces, soft hyphens and similar characters you cannot see. This tool strips them and tells you how many it found.
Can I add links, emoji or reviews to my description?
No. KDP does not allow contact details such as web addresses or emails, emoji, reviews, quotes or testimonials, pricing or time-sensitive promotions. The tool removes emoji and flags anything that looks like a web address or email. Put review quotes in the Editorial Reviews section instead.
Should I use headings and bold?
A short h4 hook line and a few bold phrases help shoppers skim. Keep most of it as plain paragraphs. Heavy bold or long lists read like an ad, and every tag uses characters.
Is my description sent anywhere?
No. The editor runs in your browser and nothing is saved on a server. The share link opens the formatter in the same view but never holds your description, so copy the HTML to move your text.
