Short answer

In a 6 x 9 in paperback set in 11 pt Garamond, 50,000, 80,000 and 100,000 words fill about 178, 276 and 348 pages. At 5.5 x 8.5 in they fill about 206, 330 and 406. Double-spaced in Word, the manuscripts run about 198, 317 and 396 pages.

These are estimates. Page counts come from our word count model, the same one behind the word count to pages calculator. Each genre row uses a typical interior setting, shown further down. Every count includes chapter openings and 12 pages of front and back matter, rounded up to an even number.

What settings does each genre use?

These are our assumptions about a typical interior for each kind of book, not rules. Genre fiction is often set a little tighter than literary fiction, and nonfiction chapters tend to run longer.

How is the page count estimated?

The model lays out a text block and fills it with average English prose:

  1. Margins: 0.75 in top and bottom, 0.625 in outside, and an inside margin of KDP's minimum gutter for the page count plus 0.25 in.
  2. Lines per page come from the text block height and the leading. Words per line come from the line width, the font's average character width and 5.9 characters per word, spaces included.
  3. A full page is multiplied by 0.7 for paragraph ends, indents, dialogue and scene breaks.
  4. Each chapter adds 0.8 of a page for its opening, then front and back matter are added and the total is rounded up to an even number.

Worked example

80,000 words, romance, mystery, thriller setting, 6 x 9 in, 27 chapters:

  • Words per page: 332, so the text fills 241 pages.
  • Chapter openings add 22 pages; front and back matter add 12.
  • Total: 276 pages.

What does the page count change?

Page count sets the spine width and the printing cost. For the 276-page example on cream paper:

For your own book, enter your word count, trim and font in the word count to pages calculator. It shows a page preview and warns you if the count falls outside KDP's limits.

Questions authors ask

How many pages is a 60,000-word novel?

About 210 pages in a 6 x 9 in paperback set in 11 pt Garamond, counting chapter openings and 12 pages of front and back matter. Smaller trims, larger type or looser leading add pages.

How many words fit on a paperback page?

At 6 x 9 in our genre settings fit 257 to 386 words on a full page. Smaller trims fit fewer. The word count tool shows the exact figure for your font, size and leading, and lets you type your own.

How many pages is 1,000 words?

In Word with Times New Roman 12 pt and 1 in margins on US Letter, about 2 pages single spaced and 4 pages double spaced. That is roughly 507 and 253 words per page.

Will a 100,000-word book fit in a 5 x 8 in paperback?

Yes. The longest of our genre settings needs about 630 pages at 5 x 8 in, and KDP prints up to 776 pages at that trim on cream paper. Expect a thick book and a higher print cost.

Does front matter count toward the page count?

Yes. Title page, copyright page, contents, acknowledgments and author bio are all printed pages. These tables assume 8 pages in front and 4 at the back. Change them in the word count tool to match your book.

Why does my formatted book have a different page count?

Page counts depend on font, size, leading, margins, dialogue, scene breaks and where chapters start. These figures are estimates from a typographic model. Once your interior is formatted, use its real page count for the cover and the price.
