How to design a book cover
Short answer
To design a book cover, study bestsellers in your genre, pick one strong image or type idea, and set the title large enough to read as a thumbnail, in one or two fonts. Then size it: a KDP ebook cover is 1,600 x 2,560 px, and a print cover is a full wrap with spine and 0.125 in bleed.
What makes a good book cover?
- It signals the genre. Readers judge in a second whether a book is a thriller, a romance or a business book. A cover that looks like its neighbours in the bestseller list is doing its job.
- It reads as a thumbnail. Most readers first see your cover about the size of a stamp, in search results and ads.
- It has one focal point: one image, one object or one bold piece of type, not several.
- It has a clear order: title first, author second, everything else after.
How do you design a book cover step by step?
- Collect references. Save ten bestselling covers from your exact category and note what they share: colours, type, image style.
- Pick one idea. A single image, a symbol or a typographic cover.
- Choose the title font. Compare your title in genre fonts with the cover font previewer.
- Lay out the front. Title large, author clear, subtitle smaller. Keep text inside the safe area.
- Check the thumbnail. Shrink the cover to about 80 px wide. If the title still reads, it works.
- Build the full print wrap once your page count is final, then add the spine and back cover.
To try layouts quickly, the free book cover generator builds an ebook cover or a full print wrap from your title, a genre font, colours or your own photo.
What size should a book cover be?
A KDP ebook cover is ideally 2,560 px high by 1,600 px wide. A print cover is one file: back cover, spine and front, plus 0.125 in of bleed on the outside edges. The spine width depends on page count and paper, so a 300-page 6 x 9 in book on cream paper has a 0.75 in spine and a full cover of 13 in x 9.25 in. Get the exact size and a template for any book from the KDP cover calculator, and see our guide to Kindle ebook cover size for other stores.
How do you choose fonts for a book cover?
Use one display font for the title and, at most, one quieter font for the author and subtitle. Thrillers lean on tall, condensed sans serifs; romance on scripts and elegant serifs; fantasy on carved capitals; nonfiction on bold, clean sans serifs. Check the licence: fonts under the SIL Open Font License can be used on covers you sell. KDP's minimum for cover text is 7 point, but the front title should be many times that.
Where can you get images for a book cover?
Use photos or art you own, commissioned work, or stock images whose licence covers book covers and the number of copies you expect to sell. For print, images need at least 300 DPI at their printed size. If you use AI-generated images, KDP requires you to disclose them when you publish, and in the United States AI output is protected by copyright only where a human shaped enough of it.
How do you design the back cover and spine?
The back cover carries your description, often a short quote or two, and the barcode. KDP adds a barcode if your file has none, in a white area that must stay clear of images and text: plan for a 2 x 1.2 in box at least 0.25 in from the spine and trim. Spine text needs a thick enough book: KDP allows it from 80 pages, kept 0.063 in from each fold, and it usually reads top to bottom on books sold in the US. Keep all text at least 0.125 in inside the trim.
Can you design a book cover for free?
Yes. With openly licensed fonts, your own photo or a typographic design, and the free book cover generator, you can make an ebook cover and a print-ready wrap without paying for software. The time goes into studying your genre and checking the thumbnail, not into the tools.
When should you hire a cover designer?
When your genre relies on custom illustration or photo compositing, when you are launching a series that needs a consistent look, or when your current cover is not converting browsers into readers. Ask for covers in your genre, licences for every image and font in writing, and a set number of revisions. Our book cover design services work that way.

Questions authors ask
Can I design my own book cover?
Yes, and many self-published authors do. The covers that work follow their genre closely, keep to one idea and one or two fonts, and are checked at thumbnail size. Start from the bestsellers in your category rather than a blank page.
What is the best size for a book cover?
For a KDP ebook, 2,560 px high by 1,600 px wide. For print, it depends on trim size, page count and paper: a 300-page 6 x 9 in paperback on cream paper needs a full wrap of 13 in x 9.25 in including bleed. The KDP cover calculator works out any size.
How many fonts should a book cover use?
One or two: a display font for the title and, if needed, a simpler one for the author and subtitle. KDP asks for cover text of at least 7 point, and anything on the front should be far larger so it reads as a thumbnail.
Can I use AI images on my book cover?
You can, but KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated images when you publish, and you remain responsible for the rights. In the United States, AI output is protected by copyright only where a human shaped enough of it, so a cover built mostly from AI images may be hard to protect.
What file format does a book cover need?
KDP takes ebook covers as JPG or TIFF. Print covers go up as one PDF holding back cover, spine and front at full size with bleed, with images at 300 DPI or more.
What are common book cover design mistakes?
A title too small or too thin to read as a thumbnail, too many fonts, several competing images, a style that signals the wrong genre, text too close to the trim, and a print cover built before the page count is final, so the spine does not fit.
