How to use AI to write a book, honestly
Short answer
AI helps most with brainstorming, outlining, research questions and checking your own drafts, and least with the writing itself, which tends to come out generic. KDP requires you to disclose AI-generated text, images or translations, but not AI used only to edit your own work. Purely AI-written text may not be protected by copyright.
Where does AI help when you write a book?
- Brainstorming: twenty possible titles, premises or twists to react to, most of which you will throw away.
- Outlining: testing a structure, or asking what a story is missing at the midpoint.
- Research questions: a starting point for what to look up, never the final answer.
- Feedback on your draft: spotting repeated words, unclear sentences or a scene that drags.
- Admin: first drafts of a synopsis or a list of chapter summaries you then rewrite.
Where does AI fall short?
- Voice: its prose sounds like an average of everything, which is the opposite of what makes a book worth reading.
- Facts: it states wrong details, quotes and sources confidently. Check everything.
- Consistency: across a long book it forgets names, timelines and what a character already knows.
- Specific detail: the small, true, surprising detail comes from your life and research, not from a model.
What are KDP's rules on AI-written books?
KDP's content guidelines split AI use in two. AI-generated means text, images or translations an AI tool created, even if you edited them substantially afterwards; you must disclose it when you publish or republish. AI-assisted means content you created yourself and improved with AI tools, such as editing or error checking; no disclosure is needed. Either way, you are responsible for making sure the book follows KDP's content guidelines, including intellectual property rights.
Can you copyright a book written with AI?
In the United States, the Copyright Office's January 2025 report concluded that generative AI output is protected only where a human author determined sufficient expressive elements, and that prompts alone do not count. What you write, and how you select, arrange and change material, can be protected. If rights matter for your book, and they usually do, write the text yourself and keep AI to the supporting jobs. This is general information, not legal advice.
What is a sensible way to use AI for a book?
- Develop the premise and outline yourself, using AI as a sparring partner. Our plot generator and beat sheet calculator help without AI.
- Write the draft in your own words.
- Use AI to point out problems in your draft, then fix them yourself.
- Fact-check anything it suggested.
- Get a human edit before you publish, and answer KDP's AI question honestly.
When is a human writer or editor worth it?
When you have the story or the expertise but not the time or the craft to write it well, a ghostwriter writes it in your voice from interviews, and the result is human-written and yours. When you have written the draft, an editor improves it without flattening it into generic prose. Our ghostwriting services and book editing services do both; see also how to write a book.

Questions authors ask
Can I publish a book written with AI on Amazon?
Yes, KDP accepts it, but you must tell KDP when a book contains AI-generated text, images or translations, when you publish it or republish it after edits. You stay responsible for the content, including not infringing anyone's rights.
Do I have to disclose that I used AI to edit my book?
Not to KDP. Its guidelines call content you wrote yourself and improved with AI tools "AI-assisted", and say you do not need to tell them. Content an AI tool created counts as AI-generated even if you edited it heavily afterwards.
Can I copyright a book written with AI?
In the United States, only the parts a human author shaped. The Copyright Office concluded in January 2025 that AI output is protected only where a human determined enough of its expressive elements, and that writing prompts alone is not enough. Your own writing, selection and arrangement can be protected.
Will readers know a book was written by AI?
Often, yes. AI prose tends toward familiar phrases, even rhythm, vague detail and characters who explain their feelings. Reviews call it out. The more of the actual writing that is yours, the less the book reads like everyone else's.
Can I use an AI voice for the audiobook?
Not on ACX, whose submission requirements say narration must be human-performed. Other platforms set their own rules for AI narration, so check before you produce.
Are the generators on this site AI?
Our plot, title and name generators combine curated word lists and templates in your browser. The book title generator also has an optional AI ideas button that appears only when your browser has built-in AI; it runs on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to us.
